MAHEC: Connecting Students to Careers, Professionals to Communities, and Communities to Better Health!

For 18 years, the Northeast Missouri Area Health Education Center (NEMO AHEC) has developed programs which support and sustain a health professional pipeline.  The pipeline begins with northeast Missouri youth interested in health careers.  NEMO AHEC provides youth with career exploration opportunities, such as hands-on lab activities and job shadowing.  The pipeline continues by supporting health profession students through college and professional school by coordinating community-based practicum that engage students with real patients.  Finally, NEMO AHEC provides existing healthcare personnel with affordable, local continuing education opportunities.  These services bring high-quality speakers to northeast Missouri, rather than sending providers out of the clinics and away from their patients.   

These activities are supported in part by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services PRIMO (Primary Care Resource Initiative for Missouri) program; the U.S. Health Resource Service Administration, Bureau of Health Professions; and through local partnerships. NEMO AHEC is one of seven regional centers in the MAHEC system. Three medical school program offices and a multitude of volunteer preceptors, mentors, and community leaders also assist with operations and programming.
