LSEM handles family, housing, consumer, education, immigration, health and public benefits, income maintenance, and older adult civil(not criminal) cases. Specifically, the Special Projects Unit(SPU) within LSEM primarily assists people living with HIV/AIDS in overcoming barriers to accessing healthcare. Priority cases in Special Projects Units include: social security disability benefits, Medicare/Medicaid appeals and other issues, Veterans benefits, wills, durable powers of attorneys and health care directives, private health insurance matters, medical privacy/confidentiality, family and medical leave act issues, consumer matters(bearing directly on one's health), and employment matters which bear directly on ability to access affordable healthcare.
